Just as in December 2010, the number of private cars crossing the international bridges of Eagle Pass dropped again. This is according to reports provided by the city of Eagle Pass. It is reported that in the last month there was a drop of 9.68%.
This represents that a total 21,832 less cars crossed from Eagle Pass to Piedras Negras in the last holiday season. This also means that the city of Eagle Pass lost a total of $45,000 in crossing fees which greatly affects the city's local economy.
This December, 203,631 private cars crossed, whereas in December of 2010 there were 225,463 total vehicles. Mexico's struggles with safety and the long crossing lines are factors that have led to fewer people crossing the international bridges. Pedestrian traffic also dropped by 5.15%, nearly 3,600 less people crossed walking during December, as compared to the same period of the previous year.
Conversely, commercial truck crossings increased in December by 5.72%.
