Eirefighters are going through extensive training to better serve the community. The highlight of their training however will be at the end of this month when fire staff will get to use a computer simulator to gauge their response performance through various scenarios. The Texas A&M Emergency Driving Simulator will be used for the first time in Eagle Pass, at no cost to the city. The simulator is housed in a 32-foot trailer and will be traveling across the state to fire departments, TEEX area fire schools and other special events coordinated by the TEEX Fire Extension Training Program; a state-funded program that provides vital firefighter training. The high tech device can simulate driving a ladder truck, ambulance or even a police car and will evaluate the driver on their response execution, then provide feedback on how they can improve. Training officer Jose Carrasco, is excited about the simulator coming to Eagle Pass and how firefighters can better assist the community, “We will get to see our mistakes and learn from them…it’s not just about responding to a scene quickly, it’s about responding to a scene safely.” In February, the EPFD will host a training course on Emergency Management of Hazardous Materials, which will be open to both the Sherriff and Police Departments.
