One woman is being detained as the responsible party in an accident in which an EPPD officer was hit by another patrol car. Zapata was taken to the hospital for his injuries.
The accident occurred minutes after 2:00 A.M. on Wednesday at the intersection of Main and Bibb. Police officers were on the scene to attend to an accident. According to witnesses a Grey escalade driven by Maribel Sanchez Buentello, age 28, lost control and crashed into the unit driven by Officer Zapata who was exiting his vehicle at the time on the driver's side, according to police reports.
Officer Zapata sustained injuries to his leg and other parts of his body, was taken to the emergency room and was treated for non-life threatening injuries and released.
Chief of Police Antonio Castañeda informed that the driver impacted the unit and left the scene, but she was followed and later stopped by police who arrested her for driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident.
The driver had Paola Carmona as a passenger who was also detained for interfering with a police investigation and for the consumption of alcohol by a minor.
The two women awaited to be Magistrated on Wednesday morning by a judge who would inform them of their charges.
